Why add rel='nofollow' to specific links?

If you want to optimize your crawl budget and eliminate issues with duplicate content, it is worth limiting the crawling of unnecessary subpages. Our module makes it possible to automatically add rel='nofollow' to the most problematic links:

1. Links such as Log in, Register, My Account

  • Dynamic and session-dependent
  • They have no SEO value — they should not be indexed or pass link juice
  • They often lead to many duplicate URLs (for example with referer=, SID=, etc.)
  • rel='nofollow' protects login, registration, and user account pages from indexing

2. Wishlist and Compare

  • Individual and temporary
  • Content depends on the user session
  • They may cause pages such as /wishlist/index/index/ or /catalog/product_compare/ to be indexed
  • In Google Search Console, they often appear as Duplicate without user-selected canonical or Crawled – currently not indexed

3. Why rel='nofollow'?

  • It signals to crawlers that they should not follow these links
  • It does not pass PageRank (SEO authority)
  • It prevents unnecessary crawl budget leakage

Does Google flag these kinds of links?

Yes. Google increasingly avoids indexing pages with login forms or account pages, but if links to these subpages appear on every page of your store, crawlers may still visit them and waste indexing resources on them.

With the Magento 2 module: Robots Tag Management, you can control this process from the admin panel.

Who is it for?

Ideal for:

  • SEO specialists,

  • Magento administrators,

  • Store owners who want to improve visibility or hide specific pages from search results.

Questions and Answers

Question
Does the module allow you to set any value for the <meta name='robots'> meta tag for categories, products, or CMS pages?
Answer
Yes — the module allows you to set an individual value for the “robots” meta tag for different types of pages in a Magento 2 store (product, category, CMS), giving you full control over whether pages should be indexed or followed by search engines.
Question
Can I disable indexing by default (e.g., “noindex, nofollow”) for all paginated pages in a category?
Answer
Yes — the module lets you configure the automatic setting of the “noindex” or “nofollow” tag for paginated pages or filters in a category, which helps avoid duplicate content issues and unnecessary indexing.
Question
Does installing the module require modifying Magento core or template files?
Answer
No — the module works as a standard Magento 2 extension and integrates through layouts and plugins; it does not require overwriting system (core) files or deeply interfering with the theme.
Question
Does the module work independently in a multi-store installation (multiple stores / store views)?
Answer
Yes — the module supports configuration per store view, which allows you to set different robots tag values for different versions of the store (e.g., different languages, markets).
Question
Does the module help prevent unwanted pages from being indexed (e.g., old promotions, search results pages)?
Answer
Yes — one of the module’s uses is to block indexing of pages that may harm SEO (such as internal search results pages, archives, or filter subpages) by setting the appropriate robots tag.
Question
Can I set the robots tag value globally for the entire store and also override it for selected categories or products?
Answer
Yes — the module offers global configuration (a default value for all pages) as well as the ability to override this value for selected elements (category, product, CMS).
Question
Does this significantly affect the store’s performance?
Answer
The impact is minimal — modifying the robots meta tag is a lightweight change in the page head. The module should not significantly affect the store’s loading time, but testing in a staging environment is recommended before enabling it in the production store.
Question
Is the module compatible with Magento 2.3.x and 2.4.x versions?
Answer
Yes — the module is available in the “SEO and content optimization” category in the store and states compatibility with Magento 2.3 and 2.4.
Question
Does configuring the module require knowledge of code or working with layouts?
Answer
No — although advanced options are available, the basic configuration is done through the Magento admin panel: setting the default robots tag, selecting excluded pages, etc. Coding is not required.
Question
Do I receive technical support and updates after purchasing the module?
Answer
Yes — as with other modules available in the store, the manufacturer states that technical support and updates are provided.
