In recent months, the e-commerce community has been asking more and more questions about the new version of Magento: is Magento 3 already available, and will it really introduce a completely new frontend? Many store owners and developers are wondering whether it is worth holding off on launching or rebuilding a store while waiting for a technological revolution. Do we already have a test version of Magento 3? Here is what we know today.
Magento 3 – Current Status as of May 2025
As of May 31, 2025, Magento 3 has not been officially announced or released in any test version. Despite circulating rumors and past announcements, Adobe has not yet announced a roadmap for version 3.0. The platform’s current development is still based on version 2.x, which has gained numerous improvements and new features, but has not yet undergone a complete change in major version numbering.
What Changed in Magento 2.4.8?
The latest Magento version, 2.4.8, was released on April 8, 2025, and brings a range of performance, security, and compatibility fixes for the latest PHP versions, including PHP 8.4. Although this is not “Magento 3,” it shows the direction of development that is preparing the platform for more significant changes.
New Features and Changes in Magento 2.4.8:
WYSIWYG editor update – migration from TinyMCE 5 to TinyMCE 7, which improves content editing security and offers a modern UI.
Removal of the ExtJS library – outdated technology was replaced with jsTree, simplifying category structure management in the backend.
RequireJS version upgrade – an update to the popular JS loader to close security gaps.
LESS issues – problems with style compilation (LESS) have been reported, affecting the appearance of templates. Amasty has published a temporary fix for this version.
Support for PHP 8.4 – allows the platform to run on the latest available server environment.
GraphQL and REST API fixes – provide better support for headless commerce.
Is Magento 3 Just a Myth?
Magento 3 has not been announced yet, but many actions suggest that Adobe is laying the groundwork for a major change. For a long time, the platform has been developing support for PWA (Progressive Web Apps) architecture and headless commerce, as demonstrated by the Magento PWA Studio project. These technologies may become the core of a new frontend approach in a future 3.0 version.
It is increasingly being said that Magento 3:
will be fully headless, separating the frontend from the backend,
will focus on modern frontend frameworks, such as React or Vue.js, which is currently supported through unofficial integrations,
will simplify the module and dependency structure,
will be integrated with Adobe Experience Platform.
For now, however, these are only speculations – without official announcements, none of these changes have been confirmed.
What Should You Do While Waiting for Magento 3?
For store owners and developers wondering whether to wait for version 3.0, the answer is: it is not worth putting investments on hold. Magento 2.4.8 is a stable and modern platform that supports all the needs of large and mid-sized e-commerce businesses.
If you want a modern frontend, it is worth considering the following today:
PWA Studio – Adobe’s solution based on React.
Hybrid or headless frontend – for example, using Vue Storefront.
Optimization of the current Luma or Blank template – taking the latest libraries and security into account.
Summary
Magento 3 does not exist yet – but the direction of Magento 2.4.8’s development clearly suggests that a major change is coming, especially in the frontend area. For now, however, it is worth focusing on the current tools and technologies available within Magento 2, rather than waiting passively for the next version.
If you run a Magento-based store, make sure it is up to date, secure, and modern today. And we will certainly hear more about Magento 3.
